The Solana Foundation has published a plan for protecting the network against future quantum computing threats.

The foundation said two of its core developer teams have independently reached the same conclusion on a cryptographic solution.

Both Anza and Jump Crypto's Firedancer team have identified Falcon as the preferred post-quantum digital signature scheme. Early implementations of Falcon are already underway, the foundation said in a blog post published Monday.

The Solana network's high-speed, low-latency architecture had raised questions about whether more computationally intensive cryptography could be adopted without slowing the network. The foundation said any eventual migration to post-quantum signatures would be manageable and unlikely to affect performance in a meaningful way.

The foundation was direct about the timeline. "Quantum is still years away," it said, adding that migration plans are well-researched and ready to deploy when needed.

The roadmap includes three phases. The first covers continued research into Falcon and alternative schemes. The second introduces post-quantum cryptography for new wallets if the threat becomes more immediate. The third involves migrating existing wallets. No immediate protocol changes are planned.

The foundation also pointed to existing quantum-resistant work within the ecosystem. Blueshift's Winternitz Vault, a quantum-resistant cryptographic primitive, has been live on Solana for more than two years. Google Quantum AI cited the project in a recent reference.

The blog post comes as the broader crypto industry debates whether advances in quantum computing could eventually compromise blockchain security. The Solana Foundation said the risk is real but distant, and that its development teams are positioned to respond when the timeline becomes clearer.
