Solana ended the week lower as traders turned more cautious, with macro jitters weighing on risk appetite.

At the same time, Solana’s core developer teams moved to reinforce the network’s defenses in the wake of April’s nearly $300 million Drift exploit, and institutional interest remained firm as asset manager GSR launched a new ETF that buys SOL.

The SOL token slipped this week as broader crypto sentiment faded and traders turned more defensive.

The wider Solana ecosystem saw a similar pullback, falling nearly 3% week-over-week (WoW), according to CoinMarketCap data.

The softer tone reflected a less supportive macro backdrop. Stalled U.S.-Iran talks continued to weigh on broader markets, while Brent crude held above $105 a barrel.

Bitcoin failed twice to break above $80,000 over the past week, undercutting momentum across core digital assets and reinforcing caution toward more volatile tokens such as Solana.

The CoinMarketCap Fear and Greed Index pulled back sharply as well, falling from 62 last week—a level consistent with moderate Greed—to 40 on April 28, back in Neutral territory.

Solana Foundation Steps Up Security Push

Solana’s security push widened this week as core infrastructure teams moved to address both immediate threats and longer-range risks.

According to The Solana Foundation, Anza and Firedancer, two of the teams that maintain Solana’s core infrastructure, have implemented a test version of Falcon, a new security system aimed at protecting the network from future quantum-computing risks.

The teams said Falcon could be activated if those threats become more immediate, allowing Solana to prepare in advance without forcing an abrupt network-wide change.

They also said the system is designed to preserve Solana’s speed and throughput, a key concern for a network that has long prioritized low latency and high transaction volume.

The push comes weeks after the April 1 exploit of Drift, which the protocol said stemmed from a six-month operation by a North Korea-linked group that posed as a quantitative trading firm and then carried out a nearly $300 million attack.

Earlier in April, The Solana Foundation launched STRIDE, a new security evaluation program run by Asymmetric Research that offers active threat monitoring to Solana DeFi protocols with more than $10 million in total value locked.

Institutional Inflows Continue Apace

Institutional activity on Solana stayed strong this week.

On April 22, crypto market maker GSR launched a new Nasdaq-listed fund offering combined exposure to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.

GSR said the launch marks its first crypto ETF and that the fund includes staking exposure for Ethereum and Solana. It is the first actively-managed crypto ETF to support staking, according to GSR.

The fund aims to address three core questions for investors: “what to own, how to earn yield while you hold, and how to be positioned as markets evolve,” Andy Baehr, a GSR Managing Director, said in a statement.

It adds to a growing wave of Solana investment products as asset managers broaden their offerings beyond single-asset Bitcoin and Ethereum exposure.
